A press release was announced February 15th, 2012 for the introduction of the Yerinton Land Conveyance and Sustainable Development Act. The bill would transfer around 10,000 acres of land from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the City of Yerington for commercial, industrial, recreational and cultural development. The city and Lyon County are looking to leverage the substantial infrastructure investments being made by Nevada Copper for the Pumpkin Hollow project.
This is an exciting time for all because right now, Yerington has the highest unemployment rate in Nevada ranking at more than 16%. This plan is a way for the people of Yerington to take control of their community’s future. Its being made possible by 1) the private investment of Nevada Copper and 2) the public vision of the community stakeholders.
This job creating project is not only important for the people of Yerington and Lyon County but also for the State of Nevada. If the land transfer is successful a potential 750-800 direct mine jobs could be created when the mine is in full operation. This doesn’t include the estimated 250-500 construction jobs that could start in 2013.
